This course addresses both weather events and manmade threats that create dangers for long-term care residents and staff. Health care workers will learn how to prepare for and respond to such events.

Purpose: To educate and inform staff about general guidelines to follow during internal disaster situations at healthcare facilities.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss facility protocol in the event of an internal disaster situation; 
  2. Explore facility evacuation measures; 
  3. Differentiate between weather watch and weather warning situations; 
  4. Discuss safety measures utilized during a tornado warning; 
  5. Explore flooding situations and appropriate clean-up procedures; 
  6. Discuss hazards associated with ice storms; 
  7. Explore dangers associated with blizzard conditions; 
  8. Discuss earthquakes.
