Renal failure, also known as end-stage kidney disease, is when the kidneys can no longer filter waste and balance fluids from the body. Dialysis is a medical intervention that filters the waste from the body to extend the person’s life when the kidneys can no longer do so. This self-study will help the health care worker understand the causes of chronic kidney disease and renal failure, what dialysis is, the necessity of dialysis, the different types of dialysis, and the implementation of dialysis at home and in long-term care facilities.
