NUR169 - Pain Management at Life's End (2.0 HR)
The purpose of this course is to integrate current evidence and best practices of pain management into clinical practice and care at end of life. Through case scenarios presented throughout this course, health care professionals can deepen understanding and application of pain management techniques to best provide patients and their families with high quality care during the final stages of life. Nurses are responsible for assessing and managing pain, and improving the effectiveness of pain control can better support patients in their final stages and promote a more dignified and peaceful end-of-life experience.

Objectives:
1. Identify components of the historical progression of pain management practices.
2. Identify techniques for assessing and managing pain at end of life using current, evidence-based knowledge across the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual domains.
3. Identify the patient’s right to appropriate pain assessment and management.
4. Name the different types of pain: acute, recurrent, and chronic.
5. Identify evidence-based pain assessments and care planning, including tools for terminally ill patients.
6. Identify barriers and facilitators to effective end-of-life pain management.
7. Name current pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to pain management at the end of life.
8. Identify the ethical standards of professional organizations and regulatory bodies.
