Suicide prevention involves a network of individuals providing mental, emotional, and physical support to an individual. This course educates long-term care workers on how to determine if a resident is at risk for suicide, as well as how to appropriately respond, report, and resource.

Purpose: The purpose of this course is to discuss a broad overview of the extent of suicide in the United States adding to the knowledge base of the learner information on the fact that effectiveness in preventing suicide ultimately depends on a more fully understanding of how and why suicide occurs.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the prevalence of suicide in America; 
  2. Discern myths and facts of suicide; 
  3. Recognize risk factor alerts and develop a plan related to them; 
  4. Categorize professional skills required to intervene with an individual at risk of suicide; 
  5. Recognize elements of effective communication skills with suicidal individuals; 
  6. Explore bipolar disorder and depression as they relate to suicidal ideation; 
  7. Identify vulnerable groups for suicide ideation; 
  8. Discuss the prevalence of suicide in our military population; 
  9. Describe the caregiving process for individuals at risk of suicide; 
  10. Recognize elements of effective response skills with suicidal individuals on social media.
