Purpose

HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus, progressively kills or damages the cells of the body’s immune system inhibiting the ability to fight infections and certain cancers. In the most advanced stage of HIV infection, AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) occurs. This course helps health care workers understand the progression of the disease, at-risk populations, HIV prevention methods, Texas-specific laws regarding HIV, and treatment options.

Purpose: To enhance the participant’s knowledge of HIV and AIDS.

Objectives:

  1. Describe and differentiate between HIV and AIDS; 
  2. Explain how HIV can be transmitted; 
  3. Identify opportunistic infections/diseases that may occur with the HIV patient; 
  4. Discuss drug treatment and clinical management of HIV/AIDS; 
  5. Discuss methods to prevent transmission of HIV/AIDS and infection control procedures to use in the workplace; 
  6. Explain exposure management.
