Purpose: All staff working in the long term care setting will increase their knowledge and skills in caring for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder.

Objectives:

  1. Explain the importance of the philosophy of care, physical environment (indoor and outdoor), security, and safety in care of the person with dementia; 
  2. Describe the importance of schedules and routines and your role as a caregiver; 
  3. Describe issues and concerns of family members of a person with AD as well as the grief process and the ongoing losses that occur as the disease progresses; 
  4. Discuss strategies for assisting family members to be involved with persons in dementia care programs; 
  5. Describe causes of stress for the caregiver and discuss strategies and techniques for managing stress.
