The health care worker will better understand latex allergy, its causes, those at risk, signs and symptoms of a reaction, diagnosing latex allergy, and proper documentation.

Health care facilities are encountering problems with the use of latex products. Latex, a product manufactured from a milky fluid derived from the rubber tree, Hevea barasiliensis, releases proteins that can cause skin irritations and/or allergic-type reactions, such as: skin rashes, hives, flushing, itching, nasal, eye or sinus symptoms, asthma, and even anaphylactic shock. Reports of such reactions have increased in recent years, especially for healthcare workers who have frequent exposures to latex. Patients who have frequent hospitalizations are also at risk, including persons with spina bifida or urogenital anomalies, individuals with a personal or family history of allergies (including allergies to fruits and vegetables), and rubber industry workers.

Objectives:
1. List common healthcare equipment and common household items that may contain latex.
2. Describe three types of reactions to latex.
3. Discuss those at risk for latex sensitivity/latex allergy.
4. Discuss the diagnosis and treatment of latex allergy.
5. Explore a latex-safe patient environment.
6. Discuss proper documentation for the latex sensitive/allergic patient.
