General guidelines are provided for administering or assisting with the administration of medications. This content reviews basic medication safety and the 6 Rights and three checks of medication administration. Learners will also become familiar with the various routes for medication administration. Students must be at least 18 years of age to participate in this course.

Objectives

After taking this course, the participant should be able to:

1.  Describe medication safety and the role of proper handwashing and hand sanitization.

2.  Describe the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn with medication administration

3.  List the 6 Rights of medication management and summarize each.

4.  Describe the basic principles of medication assistance procedures.

5.  Explain the various routes of medication.

6.  Review the techniques of medication assistance for each type.

7.  Have a working knowledge of the primary disease states of elderly, their symptoms, and treatments for those disease states.

8.  Satisfactorily demonstrate their learned competency skills in a clinical setting with a delegating registered nurse in an assisted living program.
