To be eligible for the 1-hour recertification course, you must have previously completed the full 2-hour course, Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training and/or Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training.

The purpose of this course is to better identify Dependent Adult Abuse, the signs and symptoms, reporting requirements and continuing education required for mandatory reporters. This course meets the requirements for the 2-hour training on Dependent Adult Abuse and is appropriate for any individual who is designated a mandatory reporter by the state of Iowa. 

To be eligible for the 1-hour recertification course, you must have previously completed the full 2-hour course,  Dependent Adult Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training and/or Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training.

The 1-hour recertification course must be completed prior to the expiration of the current certification date of the 2-hour course and every 3 years thereafter. If the 1-hour recertification course is not completed prior to the expiration of the 2-hour course then the 2-hour course must be completed again.

Purpose: To better identify Dependent Adult Abuse, the signs and symptoms, reporting requirements and continuing education required for mandatory reporters. This course meets the requirements for the 2-hour training on Dependent Adult Abuse and is appropriate for any individual who is designated a mandatory reporter by the state of Iowa.


Objectives:  At the completion of this course, you will:

  1. Define your role and responibilities as a manadatory reporter
  2. Identify the criteria needed for a dependent adult abuse allegation
  3. Recognize indicators of abuse in victims and perpetrators
  4. Follow reporting procedures
  5. Understand the intake and assessment process

Training Requirements:  Every individual required to report suspected abuse as defined in Iowa Code 232.69(1) and Iowa Code 235B.3(2) must complete 2 hours of mandatory reporter training within their first six months of employment or self-employment and one hour of additional training every three years (unless otherwise specified by federal regulations).  If your employment qualifies you as a mandatory reporter for both child abuse and dependent adult abuse, you are required to take both trainings and maintain certification for both curricula.  

Both the Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter Training and the Dependent Adult Mandatory Reporter trainings are available through the Department of Human Services website free of charge.
