Purpose: All staff working in the long term care setting will increase their knowledge and skills in caring for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder.
Objectives:
- Describe how AD affects communication skills;
- Discuss strategies and guidelines for verbal communication;
- Explain strategies and guidelines for nonverbal communication;
- Describe validation therapy and its usefulness in communicating with residents with AD;
- Discuss and execute strategies for communicating with residents who are non-communicative or non-responsive.
