The Antibiotic Stewardship Program is required to be incorporated in the overall infection prevention and control program.

The Antibiotic Stewardship Program is required to be incorporated in the overall infection prevention and control program. The program should be reviewed annually and as needed. The program is intended to promote awareness about the overuse of antibiotics and the negative effects associated.  

Purpose: Health care employees will be able to increase their knowledge of antibiotic use and the benefits of an Antibiotic Stewardship Program to promote the appropriate use of antibiotics, including a system of monitoring to improve resident outcomes and reduce antibiotic resistance.  

Objectives:  

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Define antibiotic stewardship.  
  2. Explain the implications of the overuse of antibiotics.  
  3. Understand when to use antibiotics.  
  4. Understand the core elements of an antibiotic stewardship program.  
  5. Demonstrate the antibiotic decision process.
