To assist the learner in recognizing and understanding the signs and symptoms of the active dying process and the corresponding care interventions.

Objectives:

Define the differences between palliative care, hospice care and end-of-life care.
- Describe how to address the educational needs of terminally ill patients and bereavement needs of their families.
- Describe assessments and corresponding interventions to improve the quality of care of the imminently dying patient and family.

Recognize the physical signs of imminent death and their management options.
- Distinguish between a smooth transition versus the difficult transition to end of life as described in this course.
- Identify the patterns of the dying process and the death event.
