Purpose: Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to understand Fibromyalgia Syndrome, the symptoms, treatment and nursing care. Objectives: 1. Describe Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS); 2. Discuss and illustrate the 18 primary tender points on the body associated with FMS; 3. List the symptoms often associated with FMS; 4. List the four criteria for the Classification of Fibromyalgia as noted by the American College of Rheumatology; 5. Discuss five options for a comprehensive care program for the FMS patient; 6. Differentiate between FMS and Myofascial Pain Syndrome (MPS); 7. Discuss four nursing diagnoses, nursing interventions and rationales for the patient with FMS; 8. Describe teaching for home care for the FMS patient; 9. List the medications most often used with the FMS patient, nursing responsibilities/ implications and patient and family teaching for each; 10. Discuss several information sources available for the patient with FMS.
