This course will enhance the direct care personnel’s understanding of the benefits of and correct procedures for oral hygiene.

Purpose: Oral hygiene is an important part of daily patient care. It is necessary as it prevents bad breath and gum infection, cavities and tooth decay. In addition, it promotes your patient's comfort and improves their quality of life. General health is improved because food tastes better, appetite is improved, and they will eat better. This course will enhance the direct care personnel’s understanding of the benefits of and correct procedures for oral hygiene.

Objectives:

  1. Discuss the causes of tooth decay; 
  2. List the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease; 
  3. Identify systemic diseases linked to poor oral hygiene; 
  4. Review signs and symptoms of systemic diseases found within the mouth; 
  5. Outline the oral care needs of people with dentures;
  6. Detail proper procedures for oral care with the conscious and nonresponsive resident.
