This course provides an overview of HIPAA, including the reasons for the law, how it is enforced, how the law has changed over time and how HIPAA relates to the health care industry.

People who are consumers of health care have rights guaranteed to them by federal law. All health care personnel must be familiar with residents’ rights and know how these relate to the care provided. This course is intended to help all health care personnel working in the long-term care setting to increase their knowledge and understanding of federal residents’ rights as well as gain a general understanding of common resident responsibilities.

Loss of muscle mass and strength is a normal part of the aging process. The resulting immobility of aging muscles can affect many areas of the body. This course provides an overview of how aging affects mobility, including risk factors, complications and dangers of immobility, and details how therapeutic activities can lessen mobility problems. 

This course informs health care workers on how implicit biases are formed, their causes, and the harm they can create. Methods for recognizing and reducing implicit biases are provided. 

By taking this course, you will learn to identify human trafficking, understand the duties of mandatory reporters, and know to how to resource and support survivors.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a dramatic life-altering condition that causes intense feelings of horror, fear, and hopelessness. This course is intended for all employees in the long-term care setting. You will learn what is social media, what privacy rights residents have related to social media, and types of possible criminal abuse via social media. You will study what the August 5, 2016 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) memo mandated that nursing homes do in regards to social media. In June 2016, the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) gave written guidance to members about what these policies may encompass, which will be discussed.

Since November 2015, the Florida Board of Nursing requires licensed registered nurses to complete a two-hour course based on how impaired individuals can impact the workplace. This course fulfills the requirement set by the Florida Board of Nursing.  The audience for this course is primarily focused on registered nurses in Florida who are directly impacted by impairment in the workplace.

The health care worker will better understand latex allergy, its causes, those at risk, signs and symptoms of a reaction, diagnosing latex allergy, and proper documentation.

Purpose: This is the final part of a three-part series exploring cultures, ethnicities, age-appropriate care, and historical issues that affect the present health care climate. ALL115a covers cultural competency in health care, ALL115b highlights age-specific considerations in health care, and ALL115c addresses past and current issues of the health care industry, such as racism and discrimination, and how to respond as an individual and facility.

In this course, learners will need to look not only at the systemic issues of racism in the industry, but also their own biases, prejudices, and influence on residents’ care. Becoming knowledgeable and more comfortable with often uncomfortable truths, acknowledging differences, and understanding the issues that both health care workers and residents face are steps in breaking down historical barriers and broadening one’s perspectives.

Florida ranks third in the United States for the most reported cases of human trafficking, according to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. Because of the prevalence of human trafficking and the state’s commitment to end it, Florida law requires nurses, health care workers, and other professionally mandated reporters to report suspected child and vulnerable adult victims of human trafficking to the state’s central abuse hotline. By taking this course, you will learn to identify human trafficking, follow guidelines for what to report, and understand how to resource and support survivors.

This self-study will help health care staff understand the terminology and basic rights of LGBT seniors in long-term care.
